"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." – Psalms 34:18
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tyiana Simone Sears on December 11, 2024, at the age of 42. A native of Bloomfield, NJ, Tyiana later made her home in Newark, NJ. She was a bright, sweet, and loving soul whose infectious laugh and warm presence touched everyone who knew her.
Tyiana was devoted to her children, her family, and her community. Though she has left us too soon, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
Tyiana attended Bloomfield public schools (Demarest Elementary, Bloomfield Middle School, and Bloomfield High School—Go Bengals!), graduating in 2001. She was a dedicated student and a gifted athlete with a particular passion for basketball, which became one of the great loves of her life. Tyiana’s athletic prowess earned her a place in the Bloomfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
However, Tyiana was far more than her achievements on the court. She was a loving mother, a loyal sister, a supportive friend, and a beacon of light in her community. Tyiana’s legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and unconditional love.
Tyiana is survived by her beloved children, Jason Elijah Cadestin (24) and Ta-Marrae Elizabeth Sears (20); her devoted sister Tamisa Covington (Kenneth); her cherished niece and nephew, Ava and Evan Covington; her aunts, Barbara Faust and Donna Harrelson of North Carolina; and her companion, Kiel Williams. She also leaves behind a host of cousins, extended family, and friends who held a special place in her heart.
Tyiana was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elnora Monteiro, Nehember “Lucky” Lawrence, J.W. Harrelson, and Edna Harrelson; her parents, Mary May Sears and Thomas “Tommy” Harrelson.
Tyiana’s life was a testament to love, devotion, and generosity. While we mourn her loss, we celebrate the beautiful memories she leaves behind and the profound impact she had on all our lives. Tyiana now belongs to the ages and sits amongst the ancestors; may we continue to honor her life and legacy, Àṣẹ.
